The violin is a bowed string instrument and is the most prominent and most numerous instrument in the orchestra. A typical orchestra usually includes around 35 violins, which are divided into two sections: first violins and second violins. The instrument has four strings, tuned in perfect fifths as follows: First string: E Second string: A Third string: D Fourth string: G The violin is capable of producing a range of four octaves, including both semitones and microtones. It is held on the left shoulder, supported under the chin on the left side, and balanced with the help of the left arm and hand. All violin melodies are written in the treble clef (G clef). The violin is played primarily with a bow, though it can also be played by plucking the strings with the fingers, a technique known as pizzicato.
